How the mighty fall. From a packed out Vicar Street, to a handful of Saturday night stragglers in Whelan’s and all in the space of seven days.
Thread Pulls played support to Grinderman last week but unfortunately didn’t seem to acquire many hoards of new fans. Even when they teamed up with fellow Dubliner’s Twinkranes for the night the turnout was threadbare.
These guys are definitely a required taste, much like celery this music is not for everyone. A band composed of only drums, vocals, a hint of trumpet and echoing vocals droning is a recipe for some interesting progressive post punk.
The rhythms of the drums coupled with the vocals of the pair are admittedly inventive but often repetitive and songs seamed to have a certain sameness. The constant echoing and shrill vocals becoming slightly grating as the set went on. Their minimalistic approach to creating was their only redeeming feature on the night, the duo were certainly more then capable of drumming up a racket.
Then there was Twinkranes. The act preceded Thread Pulls and were privy to an even smaller crowd. But this avant-garde and experimental noise coupling were way more up my street.
Their brief appearance on stage and their tirade of psychedelic sounds was enough to leave one wanting more. Few bands in Dublin has the ability to etch such a lasting memory in my music swamped brain. Bravo Twinkranes.
Whether you love them or hate them you’ll definitely never forget them. Be sure to check out the track High Tekk Train Wreck from their 2009 release to get an idea of what these guys are all about.
