Meg spoke to Gar from Dublin four-piece Riptide Movement about touring, their new album and their upcoming Electric Picnic debut.
The Riptide Movement’s new single, Hard to Explain, is released today. They support Doves in London this weekend.
So you’ve been gigging intensively for a fairly long time time now, still enjoying it?
Absolutely! Nothing beats a live show. We get such a kick out of it and plan on doing it for a very long time!
Any particular highlights for the band over the last 12 months?
Getting slots on nearly every Festival, winning this Ben&Jerry’s competition to play in London with Doves in front of 13,000 people and recording in legendary Grouse Lodge..
You’re playing Electric Picnic this year? Looking forward to it? Have you gone previously as civilians? (Is civilians the right word?)
We are playing the picnic, chuffed about that one! We’ve been to it the last 3 years, it’s in my mind the best Irish festival, I’d honestly go on my own!!
Any plans coming up for touring abroad?
Yeah, we’ve this festival in London on Sunday, we’re doing a 20 date tour of Germany in October, which will take in some gigs in The U.K and France, Oui Oui!!
Your second album is due out next year, is the material all ready to go or is it developing quite a lot as you’re gigging?
It’s coming along really well, we’re around 60% through it now.
How is the second album going to be different from the debut?
We’ve come along so much from the first album, and that will really come across on CD. We’re trying to capture what we do live on CD, the songs are really up-beat, rootsy, and well rounded!
What are you guys listening to at the moment? Any recommendations for meg readers?
I’ve Mumford & Sons on now, really enjoying Johnny Flynn, Fleet Foxes, and the classics, Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, John Fogerty, Lynyrd Skynyrd… They don’t make ‘em like they used to!!
