Cheap Freaks are one of the most exciting young Dublin bands around at the moment, we spoke to them about what’s in store for the future..
You released a four track EP recently, is there a plan for a full album in the pipeline?
Yeah in the middle of it right now. Hope to have it out later in the year…
Where are you guys recording the album? Are you all working or studying as well? Is it difficult to balance band time and work/college?
We started recording the album last summer in Berlin but the sessions went a bit belly up for numerous reasons so we decided to only keep a track or two from that and start again here in Dublin. We had some line up changes along the way so our sound began to change. We felt then it was probably best to start fresh. We’d been searching about Dublin for a few months trying to find a studio that used tape, we managed to find a DIY style studio above a pub in Fairview. Through the studio we met an engineer named Sean Coleman who had just moved to Dublin from San Francisco with lots a funky vintage equipment that we could use during the sessions so that was a major plus. So we’ve been working at it all this week!
Yeah we are all working full time at the moment so its a major pain trying to balance both. Ireland just isn’t the place to be a musician…
Who are your main influences? Do you guys generally have the same taste in music?
We are all influenced by lots of stuff, myself and Al are the writers for the band so any direct influence that the bands sound is drawn from would mainly come from us. We are both big fans of 60′s pop/psych/garage bands like the Beatles, Move, Monks etc. We are also influenced by the same approach to recording and how things should sound live, alot of bands around now are doing some great stuff like the Black Lips, Reigning Sound and Thee Oh Sees. We admire what they do a lot…
What are you guys listening to at the moment?
Lots of stuff, me personally lots of Steve Miller Band and the new Oh Sees album.
Any plans to get over to the UK or Europe for a few gigs in the near future?
Yeah hope so, just wanna get our album sorted first and we’ll go from there…
Where would you like to see the band one year from now?
I suppose making money from music and not our 9-5′s!
