According to Astronomy Ireland “Perseid meteors are in fact tiny pieces of comet Swift-Tuttle. Each year our planet intersects the stream of debris which is left behind by this comet”. This year the debris will be visable over County Meath on Tuesday and Wednesday nights 11 & 12 August.
Apparently you will see one meteor every minute or so. The best place to see the meteors is away from the bright city or street lights. So find yourself a field and lay in the middle of it staring at the sky for a few hours and catch the Perseids as they flow by.
