Oscar nomination for Kells
The Secret of Kells has received numerous nominations and awards and now the highest accolade in the movie industry is knocking on their door to extend a nomination. Makers Cartoon Saloon received an Academy Award ® nomination in the Best Animated Feature catagory for The Secret of Kells, their debut feature film. Cartoon Saloon are sharing the nominations with major studios Pixar, Fox, Focus and Disney, and beating other major studios to make it onto the short list. The Secret of Kells was also recently nominated in the BEST ANIMATED FEATURE category in THE ANNIE AWARDS, (Animation’s Highest Honour), along with 3 IFTA nominations. Fingers crossed for them tonight at the 82nd Academy Awards where they go up against Up, The Princess and The Frog, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline.
Director Tomm Moore said “The nomination for The Secret of Kells in the animated feature category of the Academy Awards ® is a huge surprise and honour. It’s a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the entire crew and all our partners in the production”.
The Secret of Kells is a spirited retelling of the provenance of Ireland’s mosted cherished artefact, the Book of Kells. With the Viking hordes approaching, the monks of Kells are forced to turn their attention from transcribing manuscripts to building barricades. The future of the precious book is in jeopardy and it falls to Brendan, a young monk, to save the day.
