Film review: Milk

15A, 128mins, Biography / Drama
Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch

The story of California’s first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk. I’m not going to ruin the ending for those of you who don’t know the story but this really is an amazing biography, set in 1970s San¬†Francisco. It opens your eyes to the shocking level of bigotry we humans are capable of. Sean Penn has a habit of greatness and this is no different. Teaming up once again with Emile Hirsch (Penn directed Hirsch in the biopic Into the Wild) along with the fantastic James Franco and a string of other talents, Sean Penn embodies the whole character of gay activist Milk. He inhabits his true essence, his courage and determination and his endearing warmth. Watching this film is quite the emotional rollercoaster, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
