It’s time Netflix took it to the next level

It’s quickly becoming an omni presence, a replacement word. Like Google. But, how do you navigate it? We’ve included our top shows from the ever expanding repertoire that is Netflix and we’ve vented a little about how it could be improved.

There’s a red button on some TV remotes that says Netflix. Yet despite this, Netflix still has a ways to go in terms of its filters, searches, category titles – what are “Exciting Films”?

In defense of Netflix, whatever the algorithm they use, it can never be 100% right. Most of the catagories begin with “Because you watched…” but Netflix don’t know why we watched anything or having watched it, if we even liked it – yes, users can rate titles but this appears to have no link to the “Because you watched…” filter.

“Because you watched Community” offers Battlestar Galactica, I love Battlestar but it’s not in the same head space as Community. In “Sci-Fi & Fantasy” there’s Frankenweenie, Donnie Darko, Water World and the Power Rangers movie, and no sign of Battlestar. What the frak? “Critically-acclaimed Films” features Spy Kids (!) along side Downfall, Adventureland beside Boyz in The Hood.

In what feels like a major oversight, Netflix doesn’t offer to seperate TV shows from movies, a basic filter in most streaming engines. The “Because you watched…” issue arises again. Calvary and Fargo are in my “Because you watched It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” list. This is a definite stage 4 in the Dennis System. There’s also no option to just “View All”. We even contacted Netflix to ask them, but they don’t provide a list of content. All our searching for a comprehensive live list led us to these guys.

One feature that stands out in their favour, is the ability to search by actor, which pretty handy. Sometimes all that’s required is back-to-back Keanu Reeves or Sean Bean. But even after a Reeves / Bean binge, Netflix leaves us lacking. And yet our relationship (/direct debit) continues. Lots of people subscribe, and by lots of people we mean over 60 million subscribers worldwide, according to this report. Lots of people constantly threaten to unsubscribe but the figures speak for themselves. TV viewers want this service, they’re even sticking around through what feels like an exhaustingly-long beta period, but it’s time to start taking things a little more serious, Netflix.

In the interim, here’s a list of some of our favourite shows available on Netflix currently (in alphabetical order). Let us know yours too. You know, so we’re all getting our money’s worth.
