Irish film, His and Hers has received widespread critical acclaim from audiences and critics worldwide. The movie is an enchanting portrait of Irish women as they share in a frank, funny and gracious manner, the story of their relationships with men from childhood to dating and marriage to old age. The story is told by a 90 year old woman and is represented by 70 different women throughout the film. It’s a unique style of story telling and a unique story which is sweeping the nation and the film critics circles.
Director Ken Wardrop based the film on his mother, the same inspiration he used for his previous short film “Undressing My Mother”. In a recent interview Ken explained “In “Undressing my Mother” my mother demonstrates her unconditional love for my deceased father, a love that was personified by her positive attitude to her aging body. My father had made her feel good about herself, although society may have seen her as overweight or unappealing.” Once again drawing on his mother for inspiration Ken describes his film style as ‘creative documentaries’. “I set out to make a film that was largely positive. It has no real drama, no bad guy but it still manages to engage and entertain (I hope). It’s a slice of everyday and all I was searching for was a little bit of extraordinary in the ordinary. I like to think I found a little of this and that’s why the film might resonate with an audience.”
The film was shot in Ireland and the crew based themselves in County Offaly for the duration of filming. Each of the woman filmed are Irish, except for Audrey the final woman to appear in the film. Audrey was from Brooklyn, New York but didn’t speak in her role. Unfortunately Audrey passed away before seeing the film.
A representative from Element Pictures said “We’ve been overwhelmed at the response – 4 and 5 stars reviews from critics and so much goodwill from audiences. People seem to be really enjoying it and we’re hearing a lot about people going back for a second viewing and bringing along mothers, cousins, aunts and anyone else who they can find!”.
