Kayley, a 6 year old from Navan, Co. Meath suffers from a form of Cerebral Palsy known as Spastic Diplegia. Unsurprisingly medical care in Ireland for this condition is sub par and Kayley is considered lucky to receive monthly physiotherapy. Waiting lists for operations and equipment are long, according to her mother they waited 2 years for a wheelchair for Kayley and she was nearly 4 years old before she received a K-walker to help her walk. In October she is due to fly to St Louis, Missouri, USA, for a procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy at the St Louis Childrens Hospital. This surgery has been performed for over 20 years by Dr Park and his team at the hospital. It involves severing the nerves that cause the tightness and stiffness in the leg. This allows the remaining nerves to the leg muscles to take over and will give her best and only chance of having life that little bit easier, and possibly being able to walk independently.
Her parents have sent up a charity called Help Kayley Walk in order to raise the necessary funds to bring Kayley to Missouri in October. They need to raise €50,000 and are organising various events to do so.
