What advice would you have for an act that is just starting out?
Gig as much as possible. Keep an open mind as to what success is and make sure you have thick skin as there is a lot of rejection.
Does an Irish act need to leave Ireland to achieve success?
Yes to have the kind of success that a big act has you would need to go abroad. Although you still would need some money behind you and a good booker to make sure you’re not just doing the same shitty gig in a different country.
What’s the best thing about being a musician in Ireland?
I guess it beats being unemployed in Ireland! Well you get to meet and work with a lot of talented people that would be the best thing probably.
What’s the worst thing about being a musician in Ireland?
The lack of opportunity to get your music across the airwaves; be it in TV or radio. Also the lack of slots or stages at the major festivals for independent artists .
What can be done to help Irish musicians make a breakthrough?
Give them a break! Review their work! Give them a slot on TV! Play they’re songs on the radio! Pay less attention to international drivel! Won’t happen but that’s what it would take…
