Gig Review / Xavier Rudd at The Manchester Academy 2

It’s been a year since meg last saw Xavier Rudd perform in Ireland and there’s been a huge transformation in his music. He put on an entirely different show and has managed to surround himself with even more music. Not only drawing from his own indigenous music, Australian Xavier has taken inspiration from the music of South Africa. He was joined on stage by Tio Moloantoa on bass and Andile Nqubezelo on drums, both formerly members of the late Lucky Dube’s band, collectively they are called Xavier Rudd and Izintaba. A guest appearance from Xavier’s resident photographer and friend James Looker on the banjo completed the eclectic musical ensemble.

There was a fresh, new feel to Xavier and his music and a more up beat energy. Xavier danced around the stage, only sitting down behind his signature didgeridoos for a few songs and the remaining time he spent dancing freely either with his fellow musicians and even some audience members he invited up on stage. There was an entirely different energy and it was clear he has become even more at home on stage than ever before. He delivered a mix of new and old, with enough of each to keep his fans reminiscing and anticipating. As ever Let Me Be lifted the roof as the room echoed with “Oooh, ooh, oooh, ooh, ooh” and Xavier stood alone on stage with one green spotlight on him as he closed the show with an emotionally charged finale of Green Spandex.
