FLApes (Desperately seeking Sunflower girl)

Meg chats with FLApes singer MayKay about touring, their new album, playing the picnic and desperately seeking the sunflower girl.

So your new album is out, you’re flat out touring and you’re playing the picnic at the weekend. What’s life like for you right now?
It had been so boring since we finished recording the album. We’d been sitting around doing nowt much, waiting for things to get busy & they got busy. Very busy, which is great. I think like in most jobs, you feel pretty useless when you’re not doing anything & kind of panicked. It’s really weird when you’re not touring or recording because there really is nothing else to do except wait. Life is colourful at the moment.

How did you find such a busy gigging schedule while you were making an album? Especially the traditionally over analysed second album.
We stopped touring early in the year to write this record so we weren’t juggling the 2 that much at all. By the time recording came around we were dying to get down to do it. And we didn’t personal over analyse it ourselves, we just wrote the way we usually do, picked songs the way we usually do & it worked out like we wanted it to.

It hit number 1 on iTunes, how did that feel?
Well it was weird to see it being juggled around with Katy Perry & Eminem to begin with so when we saw it go to number 1 I think we all just laughed. Sending a text saying ‘we’re neck and neck with Eminem’ isn’t a text I ever imagined being in a position to send.

You’re old dogs on the festival scene now, you’ve played all the big ones over the past few years, so you’ve probably gotten into the swing of catching more bands. Who are you planning on seeing at Electric Picnic this year?
I don’t think we’ve really properly gotten the hang of being festival performers & goers at the same time. After a set I think we all think we have hours before we need to or should have to move anywhere.
We’re playing the same stage as Wolf Parade this year which is amazing, definitely going to see them. And would be very happy to catch Modest Mouse, Roxy Music, Public Image Ltd, Eels & of course Rubberbandits w/ Crystal Swing. I will not be going to see Crystal Castles or Mumford & Sons.

Any plans to relax?
I hope there won’t be a chance to, for a while at least.

Did you find the girl who gave you the sunflower during your soundcheck at Tower?
No! Please help me! I might take out a personal ad…
