Films of the Year 2010

By Kevin Donnellan

#1 Inception
‘It was all a dream.’ The central conceit of every primary school essay ever written gets the big screen treatment. In yet another year of remakes and rehashs we should thank our lucky stars that Christopher Nolan continues to remind Hollywood that intelligence can pay.

#2 Social Network
A compelling story based around a company we all know (Facebook), scripted by one of the best writers around (Aaron Sorkin) and directed by a legend (David Fincher). In hindsight why shouldn’t it have worked? That it did was down to a combination of the above along with the sense that this was an era defining movie.

#3 Kick Ass
Oh please that’s what we need another super-hero movie. We keep on saying it and then we keep getting surprised that there are more stories to be told within the genre. Great one-liners, terrific performances, good story and memorable action pieces. Not the best, but one of the most enjoyable films out this year.

#4 A Prophet
Bleak in parts. Wait, in parts, make that bleak full-stop. But the journey of Malik from frightened newly incarcerated inmate to master criminal (well, decent criminal anyway) is never less than fascinating.

#5 Exit Through The Gift Shop
Directorial debut from acclaimed/derided graffiti artist Banksy. Elaborate hoax? Faithful documentary? A mish-mash of both? Opinion is divided but it’s interesting enough to be relevant no matter what the verdict.

Special Mention
Toy Story 3, Onedine, Savage, His & Hers, The Road, The Illusionist.
