EP Review: Mogwai | Music Industry 3 Fitness Industry

This sort of stopgap EP from Mogwai contains three brand new tracks. The first of these, Teenage Exorcists, sees them go all post-punk with a thumping beat and, yes, even vocals. It’s not a million miles away from San Pedro (off Hardcore Will Never Die…). What follows is the rather more grim, subdued History Day, a slow moving track in the vein of their brilliant Les Revenants soundtrack. HMP Shaun William Ryder is a throwback to their early material, where quiet passages are followed by jarring bursts of noise mixed in with the stately melancholia.

There are three remixed tracks also. The first of these, the Blanck Mass reworked Re-Remurdered takes an already menacing, unsettling track and dials up the tension. The other two tracks are less essential, though Nils Frahm’s remix of The Lord Is Out Of Control is an improvement on the original, minus the vocodered vocals.
