Read up on Editors and for every word of praise they receive, they also get dismissed as a poor man’s Joy Division. The comparison is inevitable given singer Tom Smith’s voice (the resemblance to Ian Curtis is uncanny). But what’s wrong with being second to Joy Division? If they were a poor man’s Ocean Colour Scene we’d have a problem.
As is, the Birmingham band’s third album is arguably their best, they wear their eighties influences on their sleeve but it never descends into pastiche. The sniping should quieten down after this effort. KD
