Youth in Revolt attempted to show a different side to Cera’s acting persona, and credit where credit’s due Cera managed to pull off the duality of his character and finally step away from the teenage anti-hero trying to lose his virginity… or did he? After seeing his performance, one couldn’t be punished for hoping he would start to branch out of his severely pigeon-holed career, but maybe that’s where he works best and why try to fix something if it aint broke? But what about progression?
Cera’s next release Scott Pilgram vs the World is based on a comic book series Scott Pilgram written by fellow Canadian Bryan Lee O’Malley. Directed by acclaimed British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) Scott Pilgram vs the World tells the story of Scott Pilgram (Cera), the bassist in a garage band who has never had trouble getting a girlfriend, a slight difference from Cera’s usual desperado. But now he has met the girl of his dreams and must fight and beat her seven ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart. Cera does this type of character so well that it’s sure to be a well-played role, but how soon before he is fully perched in that pigeon hole? Hopefully this movie is the beginning of a gradual progression in Cera’s career.
