Band of Skulls release their second album, Sweet Sour to huge expectation from their fans. The title track has a Queens of the Stone Age groove to it, setting the tone for what’s to follow.
There are plenty of delights here, from the slamming guitars of Bruises, through the Lir-style sweet duets of Lay My Head Down, Hometown and Close to Nowhere, to the almost Zeppelin-rock of Lies.
The Devil Takes Care of His Own is a highlight, a glam rock stomper almost like the Stone Temple Pilots. Navigate has a female vocalist, singing over acoustic picking while the track builds over a great melody… and then doesn’t do the obvious thing and rock out, extra marks for this.
One drawback of this band covering a lot of styles is that the album lacks an identity, as few of the tracks are particularly memorable.
